Each summer, the Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) calls all heroes, Hometown Heroes to be exact, to roll up their sleeves and save lives while earning funds toward the purchase of emergency response equipment and training for their community’s volunteer fire department (VFD).
Hometown Heroes is a blood drive campaign that encourages blood donations during the summer months, a time notorious for low blood collections. Throughout this year’s campaign, blood donors from 14 communities in southeast Nebraska turned into real life heroes by hosting a total of 24 blood drives.
An all-around successful campaign, 869 units were collected and 121 blood donors registered to donate for the first time. As a result, NCBB awarded funds based on whether or not the community’s blood drive(s) met registration or collection goal. In total, 5,633 dollars was distributed amongst 13 volunteer fire departments.
