Lincoln, NE (April 12, 2016) – Bryan Medical Center at Bryan West Campus has been designated as a Blue Cross and Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center for quality in spine surgery, a national honor that recognizes hospitals with outstanding measures in patient safety and health outcomes.
“Bryan Medical Center is proud to be recognized by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska for meeting the rigorous selection criteria for spinal surgeries,” said John Woodrich, president and chief operating officer of Bryan Medical Center. “Back pain is one of the most common ailments that individuals encounter, often times occurring throughout daily activities. We’re proud to offer several options to our patients to help eliminate that discomfort and live a pain-free lifestyle. This honor confirms our reputation of providing quality, leading-edge care in this area.”
To receive a Blue Distinction Center designation for quality in spine surgery, a hospital must demonstrate its expertise in cervical and lumbar fusion, cervical laminectomy and lumbar laminectomy/discectomy procedures, resulting in few patient complications and hospital readmissions. In addition, these facilities must maintain national accreditation and meet the requirements that align with principles that support evidence-based practices.
“Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska commends Bryan Medical Center for being designated a Blue Distinction Center for spine surgery” said Deb Esser, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska quality medical director. “This facility consistently delivers high quality outcomes for our members needing specialized spine procedures, and we’re happy to have them in our provider network.”
According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, spinal surgeries are one of the most frequent types of elective surgeries in the nation. In 2011, there were more than 465,000 spinal fusion operations performed across the United States, a procedure that is commonly done in the lumbar region of the lower back to treat back pain. Bryan Health offers advanced techniques and procedures in spinal surgery, such as minimally invasive operations, endoscopic approaches, vertebroplasty and artificial discs.
The Blue Distinction Specialty Care program seeks to reduce the burden of finding quality health care options by empowering patients with the knowledge and tools to find quality for their knee and hip replacement care.
